Planning That Weekend Family Cooking Activity

There are many things that you can do together as a family as a way of bonding, and one of them is cooking. Studies and even testimonials (and perhaps even your own firsthand experience) show that cooking and eating together as a family is, needless to say, a good thing. It doesn’t just teach your kids basic cooking skills, increase their confidence in the kitchen, and help improve being picky with the food they eat, it also is an excellent opportunity for you to reconnect and, as mentioned earlier, strengthen your bond.

With your hectic schedule during the workweek, you may not be able to squeeze in the time for cooking together, so the best time would be on a weekend. Here are tips on how to make that family cooking happen and how you’ll go about it to maximize its benefits:

Make time for it – The very first step to making it happen is to make sure everybody’s available for that day when you’ll get together as a family to cook. It is important that everyone is there for the activity. If you’re cooking for dinner, have the kids do their homework during the day so they’re free to join you.

Choose healthy recipes – Since it’s going to be a dinner bigger than what you usually have during weeknights, choose several recipes to prepare – from the hors d’oeuvres to the dessert. Of course, since one of your goals for the activity is to promote healthy eating among your kids, you choice of recipes should all be healthy. There are various resources online where you can even watch cooking shows that showcase healthy recipes.

Shop for fresh ingredients – Shopping too early during the weekdays would mean you’ll have to store the ingredients for some time before the using them. They may no longer as fresh as you want them to be at the weekend. Since you’ll be cooking for dinner, you can shop during the day so the ingredients you’ll use will still be at their freshest.

Make it exciting – Keep in mind that kids have a very short attention span. The minute they start getting bored, you’ll find it challenging to get their attention and have them focus on what you’re doing. You should be creative in what you do, even include colorful ingredients just to keep them interested. You can also give them incentives or rewards for their participation. That way, they’ll always look forward to participating in this weekend activity.

Certainly, the family that cooks together stays together. If your schedule allows it, make it a point to schedule this activity every weekend so your family will always have a great way to get together and bond.

Survey Provides Insights Into Travelers’ Needs

While everyone knows that there’s no such thing as a “free lunch,” travelers do like to look for a free breakfast and will often select a hotel that offers one.

That’s just one finding from a recent survey-conducted by Harris Interactive and commissioned by Best Western International. The survey findings offer some insight into what travelers of all ages look for when booking a hotel and what customer service means to them.

Here are some key highlights:

The top three considerations travelers indicated when choosing a hotel were price (78 percent), convenient location (64 percent) and free breakfast (49 percent).

Interestingly, travelers 55+ are more likely to choose a hotel based on convenience of location (70 percent) than younger travelers between the ages of 18 and 34 (56 percent), who don’t feel location is as important when booking a hotel.

On the other hand, younger travelers between the ages of 18 and 44 tend to book hotels that offer fitness centers and pools (45 percent).

Travelers of all ages agree that room service or a restaurant on-site is important when choosing a hotel (18-34: 31 percent and 55+: 31 percent).

Regarding customer service provided by hotels, U.S. adults who stay in hotels say that free parking (75 percent), the concept of feeling “at home” when they’re a guest (67 percent) and having a strong knowledge about the local area-and thus being able to share valuable tips and highlights (63 percent)-score highest when it comes to excelling at “customer care.”

Other top responses include offering free essential toiletries (beyond shampoo and soap) when they’re forgotten (63 percent), providing a free airport shuttle (54 percent), providing a free local newspaper or USA Today (51 percent), offering free products in the room (such as coffee, mouthwash or lotion) (35 percent) and providing a free bottle of water in the room at check-in (35 percent).

“For more than 60 years, Best Western has provided travelers with convenient locations and a range of amenities including breakfast and free high-speed Internet,” said Best Western’s Ric Leutwyler. “Guests who see the Best Western sign know that they can expect the same high level of customer care, comfort, service and value anywhere they go around the world.”

Make sure your pet does not bother other people or other pets in the area. You also have to make sure that your pet is well-behaved and is comfortable in the environment youre taking them to.

Cleaning Up

Always clean up after your pet. Surely, you dont want to come across dog waste while enjoying your stay at the beach. Have respect for other beach goers by making sure you clean up after your pet. Whenever you visit a dog-friendly beach, always bring a bag or pooper scooper and be sure to clean up after your pets. Most beaches impose a fine on people who fail to clean up after their pets. This made me a bit uncomfortable and a little sad.

Spain Shows Off the Best of its Cuisine in Japan

Spain exhibited traditional products decorated with beautifully-designed packaging for the sophisticated Japanese market at the Foodex fair.

Madrid, Spain, March 12, 2013 – Spain exhibited traditional products decorated with beautifully-designed packaging for the sophisticated Japanese market at the Foodex fair.

Foodex is the biggest and most important agrifoods fair in Asia. It is held in Tokyo (Japan), which is a very important market for Spanish products, so the Spanish delegation used the occasion to show off an enormous range of traditional foods, which it exhibited in spectacular fashion. The aim of this initiative is for exports to continue growing as they did in 2012, when they rose by 26%, earning 418 million in revenue.

Spain was represented at the fair by more than 100 companies, driven by the stagnation in consumer demand in Spain and the EU, which has led to -greater emphasis and bigger budgets being devoted to promotion in foreign markets-, according to representatives of the various companies taking part in the fair.

The event brought together exhibitors from 66 countries and was visited by over 75,000 company representatives, who had the chance to see the Spanish agrifood products on display at some of the largest stands at the fair and sample the country’s most traditional foods, given an innovative twist.

Some of the items vying to excite the Japanese palate included dried mushrooms, tomatoes and kiwi fruit. Paella and croquettes were wrapped in small cardboard packages like gifts, while frozen churros gave the flavour of a true Spanish breakfast. Another high point was the creative cuisine offered by Masdeu, from Catalonia, whose cone-shaped pastry bases and salmon mousse and chocolate pastries did not go unnoticed.

The list of products most frequently exported to Japan is headed by frozen meat products, which bring in 92 million, followed by olive oil (60 million), fresh fish (48 million) and wines with designation of origin (30 million), according to ICEX figures.
